This year’s Commerce Society Dinner had a special keynote speaker in alumnus James Curleigh BComm’89, CEO of Gibson Brands, the iconic guitar maker. Previously, he was the CEO of Levis. We thank James for taking the time to address SMU students, alumni, and community members and sharing his insight during this year’s event.
We had a great time during this year’s Holiday Parade of Lights providing smiles and cheer throughout Halifax. The kids along the parade route especially loved high-fiving not only our Husky, but also our unicorn, SMUSA President Mary Navas!
We once again had the pleasure of gathering with our alumni family in New England to celebrate the Boston Tree Lighting Ceremony this past December. In December, we celebrated the works of art of our faculty, alumni, staff, and students with the annual FASS Exhibit at the on-campus Art Gallery. We had a great turnout, including new Board of Governors Chair Lawrence Freeman, QC , and former Lt Governor, Hon. Myra Freeman HonDCL’07.
This was a great year for our hockey Huskies, with the women’s team being ranked #1 in the country and our men’s team making the U Cup Semi-Finals. Unfortunately, the tournament was ultimately cancelled, but we know our Huskies were in it to win it! A number of supporters gathered at the Stubborn Goat in Halifax ahead of the Quarter Finals game where the men’s team won 5-1 over Guelph.
Our 43rd annual golf tournament took place at Glen Arbour Golf Course for the 2nd year in a row. We were proud to be able to support 20 students through bursaries with the help of our sponsors. Each summer, we host an on-campus BBQ to celebrate staff and faculty who are alumni and donors. The weather kept us inside last summer, but it didn’t stop everyone from enjoying some burgers and hot dogs! Dr. Cathy Conrad welcomed more than 40 alumni, staff, faculty, and students back to the classroom with her lecture on the climate change crisis and its effect on those living in The Gambia. Our Back to the Classroom series allows alumni to sit in on a lecture and learn from some of our amazing Faculty. We’ll be presenting another Back to the Classroom event during this year’s Homecoming from September…
We held our 2nd annual Lunar New Year Basketball celebrations this winter, featuring specially-made Huskies shirts for the games. The events featured Lunar New Year celebrations presented by the Confucius Institute and the Chinese Student Association.
